In the 1990s, San Benito had three cotton fields that were combined into one large grain warehouse. Today, the city has a 144-hectare industrial park with a grain processing plant, a cotton gin, two grain elevators and several other facilities.

A 3-mile hiking trail circles parts of the city of 26,000 people with prime spots to see hundreds of bird species. San Benito is also home to the Texas Conjunto Music Hall of Fame, where the names and memorabilia of musicians are kept.
